One of the most prominent features of borosilicate glass cups is their extremely low coefficient of thermal expansion. Generally, it is around 3.3 – 3.4×10⁻⁶ K⁻¹ (measured in the range of 20 – 300 °C). This means that when the temperature changes, the glass expands or contracts very little. As a result, it can withstand significant sudden temperature differences (thermal shocks). For example, you can pour boiling water (100 °C) into a borosilicate glass cup that has been in a refrigerator at 5 °C without the risk of cracking, while ordinary glass would likely shatter under such a rapid temperature.
